A living memorial...
Trees of Strength

"Though much is taken, much abides...One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." --- Alfred, Lord Tennyson 'Ulysses' / Photos by Communication Services

Ornate letter To memorialize those whose lives were lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on our country, the Orange County Master Gardenersm program initiated Trees of Strength with a tree planting (above) in Hillsborough on Sept. 29.

Master Gardeners throughout the state and country are invited to participate. The goal is to plant a tree in memory of each life lost, as well as to honor those who protect and defend.

Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will provide educational materials and programs to assist in proper tree selection, planting and maintenance for those wishing to participate in Trees of Strength.

All trees planted as a part of the program will be identified through the tying of a red, white and blue ribbon to a lower branch. Other identifying materials, such as plaques, may also be placed near the trees.

To receive an information packet with a listing of suggested trees, proper planting and care instructions and a card to be returned for registration, contact:
