Travis Hellermann, 15, reads from an essay about losing his father, a Fort Bragg soldier who died in Iraq. Hellermann spoke at the closing ceremony of “Operation Purple: Kids Overcoming Deployment Fears,” an activities-based camp for military children across the country. North Carolina’s Millstone 4-H Center in Ellerbe hosted the last of 12 camps held in 11 states and Guam this summer. The Iraq war has touched every corner of North Carolina – all 100 counties have sent citizen soldiers to support the war. But many counties have no special way to help families monitor the emotional health of their children. The National Military Family Association organized Operation Purple to give youngsters an opportunity to share their feelings with other military kids. North Carolina First Lady Mary Easley also spoke at the ceremony.
