Distinguishing characteristics: They have a well-developed
head with chewing mouthparts, three pairs of legs on the
thorax, and two to five pairs of fleshy abdominal prolegs.  A
ring of small hooks (crochets) near the tip of each proleg is
the most distinctive characteristic of lepidopteran larvae.
