Entomology Research Programs at NCSU

The Entomology research programs focus on insects at the molecular, organismal, population, and community levels. They blend theoretical and empirical studies of arthropods within various ecosystems. We are proud of our record for obtaining grants through various agencies including NSF, USDA, USEPA, NIH, as well as private and industrial sources.

A number of research efforts include interdisciplinary collaborations within and outside the Entomology Program. Our location in the Research Triangle area provides unique opportunities for interactions with researchers at other universities, such as UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke, as well as with other research agencies and industries.

Research is an integral part of the graduate programs for all MS and PhD students. Undergraduate students may also find opportunities to participate in faculty research programs, particularly through the University Honors Program.

Suborganismal Biology

Physiology, molecular genetics, and genomics are poised to provide unique insights to fundamental questions of arthropod biology and insect control. Our department includes numerous research programs that address the underpinnings of insect form and function using these exciting new technologies.

Organismal Biology

Understanding the development, behavior, and function of insects lies at the very core of Entomology as a discipline. Our research programs address emerging questions that provide basic (long-term) and practical (short-term) solutions.

Population Biology

How do insects adapt to their environment and interact with each other and with other species? What are the dynamics of pest populations within agro-ecosystems? We integrate applied and basic science to enhance our understanding of insects in natural and managed environments
