Please describe your current job position:
I am an Assistant Professor in Weed Science. My position is 70% research/30% extension. Responsibilities include weed management in small fruits and vegetables and field grown ornamentals.
What is the most interesting thing about your job?
Having to pick out which areas I do research in a combined $1.5 billion industry.
How well did the Department of Horticultural Science at NCSU prepare you for your current position?
Well, but you can never be prepared for the administration side of a university. As a student you are sheltered from all the paperwork.
What other horticultural-related jobs did you have prior to your current position?
PostDoc, 2 years, same area
What made the Department of Horticultural Science at NCSU unique?
The use of Mac computers, hardly anyone uses them in agriculture.
What would you say are the strengths of the Department of Horticultural Science at NCSU?
Definitely the diversity of research areas. The Department is large, covering so many topics within the broad field of Horticulture.
If you received degrees from other departments/universities, how did the experiences differ from the one you had in the Department of Horticultural Science at NCSU?
My undergraduate work was back home in Canada, but it can’t be compared, since the enrollment there was only 950 students.
What words of wisdom/advice would you give students thinking about attending the Department of Horticultural Sciences at NCSU?
As a graduate student, get involved in grant writing early. It is the lifeblood of a faculty position.
