Achieving Results in Economic Development

NC State University, a land grant institution for the New Economy, delivers significant economic and social benefits through provision of knowledge and technology-based solutions to government, industry and the private sector. Funded research combined with teaching and extension produces innovations, which when transferred and commercialized, results in knowledge and wealth creation. Results include more competitive manufacturers, expanded resident corporate R&D, more local high-growth companies, increased technology commercialization and empowered communities throughout North Carolina.

The opportunity exists for a significant economic development partnership between NC State and the NC Department of Commerce (NCDOC) and other agencies to utilize the University's extension, teaching, research and technology transfer capabilities to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of North Carolina's existing and traditional industries as well as technology-based emerging companies.

The goals, implicit in this opportunity, directly address recommendations made by the State Science & Technology Institute and the U.S. Department of Commerce, which are designed to enhance government-industry programs that encourage the growth of business and industry statewide through the application of science and technology. This thrust seeks to improve the accessibility of institutional resources through a comprehensive entry "portal" connecting industry, whether resident or under recruitment, with needed expertise, facilities, interns and graduates, and new technologies and best practices. The portal can be expanded to include resource and referral of other areas of expertise at constituent universities. A unique strength of NC State is that it enhances technology transfer by connecting current Centennial Campus partnerships and proposed Centennial Campus business incubator to economic development opportunities through NCDOC regional and county personnel, and other key collaborators.
