We are entering the golden age of biotechnology, whose advances promise cures for dreaded diseases and relief for terrible suffering.  Most of these techniques are developed for therapeutic purposes.  But those in the field of bioethics are asking if these new drugs and procedures should be used to help everyone who desires to look younger, perform better, or feel happier.  Doctors now perform more than 450,000 knee replacements a year and 208,000 hip replacements.  Most are done on boomers who will pay big bucks not to be slowed down.  This aging segment of the population also spends money extravagantly on mood enhancers and cosmetic surgery.
