Caldwell Hall, connected to Winston and Tompkins on either side, houses studies in English, communication, and political science. Caldwell Hall, known only as Link Building for years, honors John Tyler Caldwell, who served NC State as chancellor from 1959-1975. During his term at NC State, the B.A. program was inacted, programs were added to the liberal arts, women's enrollment increased, and campus facilities were greatly expanded. Caldwell earned master's degrees from Duke and Columbia Universities, and a Ph.D. in political science from Princeton University. In addition, he received seven honorary doctorates from other universities, and an honorary doctor of law from NC State.

Caldwell held a number of administrative positions, including president of Alabama College and later of the University of Arkansas, to which he would apply his beliefs as a Christian Scientist. During World War II, he had been lieutenant commander in the Navy. He also the first president of the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies, Inc., and in 1962, became President of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.
