The original Pullen Hall was burned by a student arsonist in February 1965. The building, which was located where the Peele Hall parking lot is now, housed an auditorium, a reading room, and a dining hall. It was the center of college and community activities for many decades, even including pranks such as locking a bear in the building in protest against compulsory church services. The fire destroyed band instruments and music, including all campus copies of the Alma Mater. NC State's first basketball game on campus was played in the original Pullen Hall in 1911.

The new building is now used for student affairs offices. Pullen Hall, Pullen Road, and Pullen Park are named after Richard Stanhope Pullen (1822-1895). Pullen gave 60 acres of farmland that he bought as a location for the proposed agricultural and mechanical college (NC State). A portion of the farm was designated to be a city park and the boundaries were drawn by a mule and plow. A bachelor, Pullen often contributed to family and community. He helped fund Peace College, the Woman's College in Greensboro (now UNCG), and the Edenton Street Methodist Church. Pullen's success in business and his large accumulation of real estate allowed him to develop the northeast area of "old Raleigh" and areas around Bloodworth, Peace and East streets. He maintained a standing offer of cash support for new Raleigh industries as well.
