Founded in 1988, the North Carolina Solar Center represents a singular partnership among the State of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and the sustainable energy industries. Recognizing the need for a central clearinghouse that could assist the state’s citizens, businesses and institutions in using solar energy, these forces joined to launch the Solar Center with sponsorship from the NC State Energy Office (then the Energy Division) and support from the NC Sustainable Energy Association and numerous private sector donors. The Center's comprehensive array of outreach, extension and research programs quickly vaulted it to recognition as one of the premier solar energy centers in the country.

Since its founding, the Solar Center has evolved into an organization with much more diverse scope, capabilities and services. In addition to the research and development of solar energy resources, the Solar Center's programs have expanded to include other sustainable energy resources like biomass and wind energy, alternative fuels and clean transportation technologies, green building design, and energy efficiency technologies.
