Career Skills

Preparing Future Leaders provides professional development for your graduate school career and beyond. Whether you plan to work in industry, academia, government, or nonprofit, transferable skills such as communication, career planning, and leadership and interpersonal skills prepare graduate students and postdocs to compete in the global market.

The Professional Development Seminars (PDS) series offers graduate students the chance to enhance their career preparation by developing core skills that can transfer to any position after graduation. The lunchtime seminars generally last about 90 minutes, and participants can choose to attend one seminar or many, depending on their interests and schedule.

In the spring semesters, PFL offers the Graduate Leadership Development Series (GLDS) for up to 25 graduate students who wish to increase their self-awareness, professional adaptability, communication, and leadership skills, four core competencies that all graduate students should develop before entering the workforce.

From time to time, we offer special events that provide a more in-depth focus on particular topics. In fall 2009, we offered a special four-hour workshop, Enhancing Your Leadership by Understanding Your Personality Preferences, which helped participants learn how the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) can help them lead and work with others more effectively.

Past special events have included a workshop on leadership and personality type offered in spring 2009. In spring 2009 we also offered the FMI Business Development Series, a collaboration between Preparing Future Leaders and industry partner FMI, which included three 3-hour workshops led by FMI senior personnel and tailored for graduate students at NC State.
