We appreciate your interests in Universal Design, a global movement of inclusive design practice initiated at NC State University College of Design. The Center for Universal Design is currently not active due to funding challenges. We are working to revive the Center, hopefully in the near future. We are unable at this time to provide assistance to your design inquiries.

Standards for A
ccessible Design

Sponsor: U.S. Department of Education/NIDRR

PI: Leslie Young

Period: 10/01/94 through 03/31/00

The Center for Universal Design has almost completed preparing a series of broadcast quality videos and complementary training materials to address the technical and scoping requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design. The project (a) illustrated how people with disabilities use the built environment and the rationale underlying specific technical and scoping provisions of the standards for accessible design, (b) explained how discrete provisions of the standards for accessible design mesh to ensure accessibility, (c) used innovative video techniques, including animation, fade-ins, and transitions from footage showing a person using a space or element to footage showing design layouts and diagrams from the relevant sections from standards for accessible design, and (d) developed complementary training materials in conjunction with the videos. The Center worked with national organizations in the building industry and with federal agencies to develop a dissemination plan for distributing the videotapes and related materials to practitioners in the field.

These videos are available for purchase.
